The GOLF COURSE is Open for the 2008 Season

Course Update by Steve Muys, Golf Course Superintendent

Course Update
April 25, 2008

The arrival of spring has been a long time coming. The weather as of late has been great, with numerous days in the 20’s it is hard to believe that only a few weeks ago the course was under winter conditions. Many people have been asking if the reservoir is being filled. The answer is yes we recently installed the pump and are now pumping. I do not like to pump the water in early spring because there is still a great amount of silt and sediment in the creek water. The silt and sediment build up occurs throughout the winter when the banks wash out on numerous farmlands throughout the area. Now that the creek has settled we can begin pumping; this will eliminate excess silt and sediment that would otherwise be pumped into the reservoir. The creek typically flows fairly heavy well into June and this offers us plenty of time to fill the reservoir. Another question I have been asked is concerning water coolers on the course. Typically we start to put drinking water on the course in early May when the temperature begin to rise, however April did surprise us with numerous warm days. The current health laws require the course to have our seasonal drinking water systems tested before they can be used on the course. This past week were able to get the drinking water system set up and tested, we received a clear test(good) and we will putting out water starting this Saturday. Drinking water on the course is a serious issue and we take every precaution to ensure that the drinking water we put on the course is safe to drink. In other news the course the coming along very nicely, the good weather has all the grass growing and so far everything looks to be good. Any winter damage suffered has begun to grow out and the greens are improving by the day. We are looking forward to a great year ahead of us, we currently have a number of projects on the go and things will only improve throughout the season. The projects consist of halfway house renovations, an on course washroom and the new entrance sign which will be on the corner of the property by the eleventh tee. My grounds maintenance crew has been very busy with numerous items so far this spring, such as preparing irrigation systems, mulching the transplanted trees, rebuilding the wooden bridges and other various tree work. We anticipate a great season this year it has been great to see members out on the course!

Course Update

April 13, 2008

Due to the poor weather conditions we were forced to delay the opening of the course once again. We have a number of greens that are completely saturated and would suffer damage if played. The opening has been postponed until Thursday April 17th, I feel with a couple nice days in the forecast the course will receive a chance to dry and become playable. The last minute decision to postpone opening was due to the even more rain that fell Saturday night, I was hoping that this storm would miss us and we would be able to get the course open, with the course already very wet I felt it was in the best interest of the club to keep it closed.
I would like to thank all the volunteers that came out Saturday to participate in our Annual spring clean up we had 45 + volunteers and were able to have the course cleaned up in a couple hours. This help is very valuable to us as it gets the course cleaned up and in great shape for opening. Great job done by all Thank You very much.
With sunny days in the forecast we will be seeing everybody shortly

Course Update

April 10, 2008

Over the last couple of days, the course has dried up and made it possible to get equipment out. We have been working on some tree work as well as repairing the bridges on # 2, and 3. The course has greened up with the beautiful days we have been receiving. We have now had a chance to get some equipment out and start mowing; we have mowed all the greens and tees and have started on fairways and approaches. The forecast over the next couple of days does not look good however; we are still planning to open the course on Sunday. There is still a fair bit of cleanup work to be done and with the help from our cleanup day the course should be in great shape for opening day. The halfway house renovations continue but the late season delayed the start of the project. However, we are moving forward and the project should turn out to be a great improvement to our course. Hope to see everyone shortly as we get the course open and everyone has a chance to enjoy the beautiful days ahead.

Course Update

April 7, 2008

Finally with this beautiful weekend we just had it feels like spring. As temperatures have risen we have seen a significant amount of snow and ice disappear from the course. The combination of melting snow and rainy days has left the course very wet and the creek has flooded holes # 4, 6, 9, and 13. With this past weekend’s weather I was pleasantly surprised to see how much things have dried up around the course. There are still a few small patches of snow around in shaded areas which should disappear shortly. We have a couple more of the staff back this week and will be starting to work on the course. We have completed refinishing all the fixtures and will now start to work on bridge repair and tree work. As things continue to dry we will start getting some equipment out and start to prepare the course for opening. Last Thursday we removed the tarps from greens 1, 2, 3, and the putting green. The tarps protected the greens and have left them in great shape for spring. I have walked around the course to find it has wintered fairly well, I have seen a little disease on some Fairways and Tees, although it does not look active and will clean up quickly. The greens were clean and looked to be in good shape also. Our cleanup is set for the 12th with opening to follow as soon as possible. Hope to see everyone soon.

Course Update

March 28th, 2008

Winter continues as Mother Nature drop another 3” of snow on the course. Next week temperatures are expected to rise possibly to double digits for a day or two. We are also anticipating a couple days of rain for next week. With the combination of warm temperatures and rains, this should help get rid of the snow and start to get the 10” of frost out of the ground. We are currently working on preparing all the course fixtures and getting the equipment ready for the season. The halfway house renovation project started earlier this week and work is progressing. I will continue to post course updates as the weather changes and conditions improve. Once snow has receded, we will be able to assess the conditions on the course and start working for an opening date. It is always our goal to try to open the course by April 1; however, Mother Nature has delayed us this year. The cleanup date has been re-scheduled to April 12th due to the snow and rains expected next week. We will hopefully get the course open as soon as possible after the cleanup date.

Course Update

March 24th, 2008

We are still waiting for Spring. Due to the long winter and with 90% of the course still covered in snow we will have to postpone the annual spring cleanup. We will re-schedule it for a later date once we can determine what the weather may do. We are hoping for Saturday April 5th. Please check here for continuing updates.

Thank You, Steven Muys

Course Update

January 25, 2008

Last fall we put the course to bed before winter came and everything was in good shape heading into the winter months. Late in November, the creek started to flow again and we were able to recharge a portion of the reservoir. In early spring we will top the reservoir off to prepare for the 08 season. The farmer’s almanac is calling for 2008 to be dry until August with temperature 3 degrees cooler than normal. We will have to wait and see how accurate this forecast is.
In the late fall (November) we did renovations to # 13; the bunkers and greens surrounds have been reshaped. We now have three bunkers on this hole two pot bunkers to the back left and a larger one to the right front. The renovation also included a cart path extension behind 13 green to 14 tees and down towards the forward tees on 14. We completed this project with 22 skids of sod just before snowfall. The improvements to the hole look great and with the new bunkers should prove to play much superior. The green site will be ready for play in early spring as soon as the sod has rooted.
Last week we had the ditches on #1, #2 & #3 excavated. We relocated the fill to the driving range to improve the target areas. This should not only assist with course drainage but also visually improve the holes and driving range.
Winter is still a very busy time around the maintenance shop. We have to do all the repairs to the equipment, service it and prepare it for the season to come. I attend some continuing education conferences and trade shows to keep up to date with our industry. I also spend many hours in the office updating the operation, planning and organizing for the season to come.
Some of the items we have planned for the 08 season will include an on course washroom , cart path rebuilding, a new patio to the west side of the clubhouse as well as cleaning up a landscaping around the newly rebuilt halfway house as well as many other items. We look forward to a great year in 08, our annual spring cleanup date has been set for March 29th Hope to see you there.
